YOU FEEL IN YOUR BODY

This post is for those who have trouble identifying certain feelings/sensations in your body.

“Getting in touch with feelings requires that you live inside your body and pay attention to the sensations that are there. Feelings are just that-things that you feel in your body: tightening in your throat, trembling, clutching in your stomach, shortness of breath, moistness behind your eyes, moistness between your legs, warmth in your chest, tingling in your hands, fullness in your heart.

If you have ignored your body for a long time, tuning in to these sensations may seem scary, strange, or unfamiliar. Or you may be able to objectively report the sensations you feel in your body but not know what they mean.

When children are very small they don’t have the conceptual ability to say, “I feel scared.” They might say, “I feel yucky in my stomach.” When adults give that sensation a name, the child learns to connect the feeling with the emotion.

If no one paid attention to what you felt and you never learned to name your feelings, you will be starting at the beginning, teaching yourself to read the messages that your body give you.” (The Courage to Heal)

A trained and skilled counselor can help you along with identifying certain feelings/sensations you have trouble relating to.

I have noticed my sense of smell has heighten more since my journey. The weather too has had an effect on me. I can recall as a child certain days, especially cooler weather, how it affected me. Down to what I even wore and was doing at the time as a child. Even one of the abusive incidents in the woods with my brother, I can recall looking up to a blue sky through the trees. Today I still am affected by being sensitive to cooler weather.

  4. To go back and retrace your footsteps with those unpleasant journeys is not easy...Yet, you are so courageous to do so and by revealing them, encourages others that they, too, can face those fears and learn to overcome them. God bless you JBR and may He continue to guide you and comfort you.

  5. damn, this is so so real. when asked how i feel, i just can't utter any words. 'cause i just can't express what i feel... and i sit and wonder if i'm stupid or something. but my therapist helped me a lot with that. told me again and again how well i can articulate. only, when it really hurts, really scares me, then i'm dumbstruck... thanks for this post hunny!

  6. I am the opposite - I feel every itch, every little twinge, everything. There is no boundary between internal physical feelings and external environmental stimulation. I feel a hiccup long before it comes out!

This time of year is bad for me, too. I've been seeing it more and more on other blogs, too, this is a bad time of year.
